heh. it's an "absolutely" brilliant ad campaign in that it gets people talking about it. "there's no such thing as 'bad' publicity".
and it plays to the old-time grudge among many mexicans (i know, i was born there) that the US "stole" all that land from them.
there's a popular joke there about how the worst part is that the U.S. stole "all the nice parts of the country". The subtext I always saw was the implicit admission that if those territories had remained a part of mexico, they'd be as much of a hell-hole as the rest of that country is, plundered by decades and decades of corrupt governments.
and by the way, they'd still be coming here... only difference is, they'd be sneaking into Oklahoma. (;
