The Cheapening of the Comics

Here's an intriguing yet disheartening speech given a while ago by Bill Watterson of "Calvin and Hobbes" fame. He laments how syndicates have negatively influenced the quality of comic strips and suggests what can be done about it.

man, you made me remember how much i miss "calvin and hobbes". that's some very interesting stuff, and i'm not one to read super-long articles, online or otherwise.

i'd like to think things aren't as bad as all that. there's still good stuff out there. i noticed that BW mentioned "doonesbury", which was, is and forever shall be execrable and unfunny leftist crap. for witty and entertaining leftist stuff, one's much better off reading "the boondocks". and for very good *conservative* stuff, "day by day" is pretty good too. http://www.daybydaycartoon.com/

now i'll go back to reading "scientific progress goes boink".

NIW,

I enjoy any well-done cartoon, even if they lean to the left. Case in point, as you mention, is "The Boondocks", which I find clever and often hilarious.

I too have never enjoyed Doonesbury. I think it succeeded only because there was no competition. Trudeau just can't compete when there are guys like McGruder out there.
